CNA Certification Information

It’s important to know that in the state of Delaware, all individuals seeking to become certified nursing assistants must meet all course requirements prior to sitting for the state certification exam. Prior to working as a certified nursing assistant, there are requirements to which all potential certified nursing assistants must fulfill.

All student nurse assistant candidates applying to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Examination in Delaware must have successfully completed a state-approved nurse assistant training program. You are allowed two (2) years from your training program completion date to pass the nursing assistant examination. If you do not pass the examination within a two-year period, you will be required to re-train before you will be allowed to take the examination again.

Training programs are a minimum of 75 hours in length and are comprised of lecture, laboratory, and at minimum 37.5 hours of supervised clinical experience in an approved clinical setting.

In order for you to work as a CNA you must first pass both written and practical exams set forth by the nursing board within 1 year of completing your course.

For those applying for reciprocity from another state should note that they can not work as a CNA until they get cleared by the nursing board of DE and your name is put on the registry. The nursing board will contact your previous states nursing board to make sure you were in good standing with them and that you do not have a criminal record.

CNA Training in Delaware

Individuals can become a certified nursing assistant in the state of Delaware upon successful completion of state approved course work and certification exam at an approved testing site. Approved training programs adequately prepare students to sit for this exam. All programs require a minimum of 75 hours which includes a minimum of 37.5 clinical hours. Programs range from 5 weeks to a full semester in length. The cost of these programs is between $1400 and $4000, though some long-term residential care facilities may offer free training programs. Payment plans and scholarships are often available colleges and technical schools. In some locations that offer free training, students may be eligible to receive compensation during the clinical portion of the program with an established commitment to that facility. The Nursing Assistant Program at Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing at Beebe Medical Center is a 150 hour, 36 credit certification program. The classes are held at The School of Nursing, with clinical opportunities at Harbor Healthcare. The program cost is $1,750.00 and includes book & all course materials. The Nursing Assistant Program is approved by the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services Division of Long Term Care. The 150 hour CNA program at Delaware Technical Community College consists of two core components: 75 hours of classroom/lab training and 75 hours of hands-on training at an approved clinical site. An additional 5 hours are scheduled for mock testing and final exam. The course meets for 31 sessions: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 5:00-10:30 pm at the Delaware Tech’s Owens Campus in Georgetown, Del., and various approved clinical sites. The course fees are $1,550 includes textbook and CPR course. The CNA program at Tri-State Technical School is a 5 week course preparing students through classroom and clinical training. The cost of the program is $2100 which includes Text Book, supplies, CPR & First Aid certification, background check and state exam fees. A $500 deposit is required for enrollment in all courses. The certified Nursing Assistant Program at the KFW Medical Institute is a 6 week course. Students that complete the required 156 hours of training—78 hours of class instruction and 78 hours of clinical/practical experience in a hospital nursing facility—in theory, labs and the clinical areas.
